Calling In All the Favors and Pulling Out All the Stops to Celebrate College-Bound Seniors at the First #ATL College Signing Day

I’ve declared Friday, April 27, 2018 as the day metro-Atlanta will celebrate 500 high school seniors committing to the colleges of their choice. Me and my team are making it happen and I couldn’t be more proud!

I’ve watched other major cities like Philadelphia and New York host major events and, I thought, “it’s time for metro-Atlanta to celebrate our students’ achievements loud and proud, too.” To that end, we’re inviting seniors from more than 150 schools throughout nine metro-Atlanta counties to celebrate their choice to pursue higher education. Among the 500 students will be the entire Class of 2018 from Cristo Rey Atlanta Jesuit High School!

For me, this effort is a continuation of my commitment to encourage students toward the many opportunities, I believe, a college education opens. As a first-generation college graduate and 15-year alumni recruiter for my alma mater, the University of Notre Dame, I know first hand that being celebrated is an important part of the college choice process. Students are going through so many emotions at that time. Why not show them that they have their whole community behind them in this decision and we want the world to know we’re proud of them.

College Signing Day events were started by former First Lady Michelle Obama’s Reach Higher Initiative and Better Make Room Campaign in 2013. In 2018, #ATLCollegeSigningDay will join the more than 2,700 events, celebrating over 1.2 million high school students. More than just a party — #ATLCollegeSigningDay lets students know the community is proud of their hard work, invested in their futures and excited to see what Atlanta’s next generation of #ATLchangemakers, #ATLrisktakers and #ATLconventionbreakers do! I can’t wait to see how the Atlanta community shows up and shows out to celebrate our scholars.

By next week, I am looking forward to announcing our Keynote speaker. I am pinching myself with excitement to share this phenomenal young woman’s story!
